Diamond Cutting
When a diamond is first extracted from the earth it looks exactly like any other ordinary pebble you may have just picked up. It’s hard to see the brilliant stone it actually is and that is exactly why the craftsmanship of diamond cutting is so very special.
Form of art Diamond cutting is an extremely precise art form and it requires a highly skilled craftsman to reveal their glowing splendour. It takes special knowledge, tools, equipment and techniques to cut a diamond and more importantly; the art of this process will have direct impact on the end result of the diamond. It's the only man-made process in the stones development and together with the other factors – Colour, Clarity, Color and Carat (weight) – it determines the value of the stone. Combined, these factors are also known as the Four C’s. (Carat, Clarity, Color, Carat).
Different cuts, different shapes Diamonds derive their brilliance from their reflection of light. Our cutters must therefore fashion the surfaces in such a way that maximum light is reflected between the faces. One wrong cut will destroy the beauty and therefore the value of the stone, while a good cut amplifies the beauty of the most valuable rock in the world. Our craftsmen can cut the stones in various shapes, (naturally) depending on their original appearance. The most popular cut is the round Brilliant Cut, usually with the stone used as the centrepiece of a ring. Also in demand are the Marquise, Princess, Radiant, Emerald, Asscher, Pear, Oval and Heart Cuts.
Diamond Polishing Many people underestimate the process of polishing, which is slightly unjustified. Indeed, the polishing room might be one of the most interesting workspaces of Coster Diamonds' extensive cutting department. Polishing takes place on a cast iron disc whose top is impregnated with olive oil and diamond powder. A diamond is the hardest natural product in the world, but thanks to the olive oil, the diamondpowder enters the pores of the disc, making it sufficiently hard to allow polishing (of the diamond). The proportions between the top of the diamond (crown), the underneath (pavillion) and the flat surface of the stone (table) determine its (the) brilliance (of the diamond). An expertly cut diamond governs the polishing and therefore the brilliance and 'fire' of the stone. Would you like to know more about the glorious art of diamond cutting? Please contact us.
