How we Guarantee Our Diamonds are Untainted
Diamonds are a product of nature and a product of people. Mother Nature presses little pieces of carbon together and people mine and polish these. The results are sparkling diamonds. Millions of people love and adore these precious stones, for hundreds of years. At first only available to the rich and famous, but later on also people like you and me were able to buy a diamond. Everything about diamonds was completely fine – until the 1990s.
Conflict diamonds are never an option
Around that time, stories come out about conflict diamonds, also known as ‘blood diamonds’. These are stones from areas controlled by forces against the legitimate, internationally recognized government of a country. They sell diamonds to buy arms and war materials for rebellious groups that took highly violet actions and brought great suffering to civilians. Of course, many private buyers were completely unaware of this. Because once a blood diamond is cut and polished, the underlying story of that conflict diamond is ‘brushed away’. After that, it looks exactly like diamonds from honest sources. But can a product with such a questionable background, truly be beautiful? We strongly believe it cannot.
How we make sure our diamonds are untainted
When the messages about conflict diamonds reached us, we knew instantly we had to do something. There was no way we would benefit over the backs of people that are suffering because of our products. We just had to be sure all of our diamonds are obtained in a responsible way and that everyone who is included in the process is treated well. Our diamonds should not be harmful to the environment, nor to mankind. Therefore, our retrieved diamonds are in accordance with the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme. “The Kimberley Process (KP) is a binding agreement that imposes extensive requirements on every participant. The visible evidence of this commitment is The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) that both safeguards the shipment of ‘rough diamonds’ and certifies them as conflict-free.” (Source: kimberleyprocess.com)
A transparent chain
The Kimberley Process is a good start when it comes to responsible mining and protecting basic human rights. However, that Certification Scheme only covers the first part of the chain: the mining. We feel there is more to sustainable diamonds than just that. We want to know about and take care of every part of the diamond supply chain. From compressed carbon, all the way up to the sparkling stone on your finger. Therefore, we manufacture our diamonds ourselves, here in our polishing factory in Amsterdam. At our in-house factory, we can ensure the quality of our diamonds and the working conditions of our colleagues. That our customers can see the craft of diamond cutting and polishing up-close, sure is a nice bonus.
