Our Legacy

Amsterdam,
the centre of the Golden Age

In Dutch history, many see the year 1602 as the beginning of the Golden Age. It was a time of substantial growth and prosperity with Amsterdam as the absolute centre of all wealth and trade activities. Amsterdam quickly developed into a city with international appeal. Consequently, it attracted a lot of different people who wanted to profit from commercial opportunities the city presented.

Our Legacy

Amsterdam,
a diamond opportunity

At the time, Amsterdam was the perfect location for diamond trading Jews to reside the vibrant city. As they were chased from catholic countries in the south of Europe, Amsterdam welcomed them and gave them the chance to develop their diamond polishing and trading activities. In only a few years’ time Amsterdam flourished and surpassed Antwerp as the leading diamond city of Europe.

Our Legacy

Diamonds travelling
Amsterdam from abroad

In the 18th and 19th century, Amsterdam took full advantage of Holland’s colonial activities and partners. When large amounts of diamonds were discovered in Brazil the Dutch agreed with Portugal that the diamonds would only be sold to them. The same for South Africa, when it was colonized by Holland and all its diamond production travelled to Amsterdam as well.

Our Legacy

Diamonds and royals,
a growing interest

As diamonds emerged everywhere across Europe, the second half of the 18th century marked the beginning of royals’ interest for jewellery to express their wealth and power. As it was well known that Amsterdam imported beautiful diamonds from exotic parts of the world, the demand for diamonds from Amsterdam reached unprecedented heights for years to come.

Our Legacy

The city of diamonds, where it stands today

Although a lot of diamond polishing activities have transferred to Asia, Amsterdam remains one of the most important cities in the world for diamond trading. After more than 400 years of diamond polishing and trading, Amsterdam still has every right to be called a true City of Diamonds.
