What is the difference between a necklace and a pendant?
Necklaces and pendants go hand in hand, as they are mostly worn together. Yet technically they are two very different pieces of jewelry. A necklace is a jewelry piece that goes around your neck, while a pendant is a small piece of jewelry that is hung onto the necklace itself. This could be a heart-shaped diamond, attached to a chain necklace for example. Besides combined with a necklace, a pendant can also be featured on bracelets or anklets. You can actually wear a pendant on any part of the body, as long as it is attached to a chain. A necklace however, is worn on your neck only. Sometimes we also refer to a necklace as a collier, as the term necklace is often used as a generic term.
Types of necklaces
A necklace is a standalone piece that largely consists of a metal chain in gold or silver. Necklaces come in many shapes and sizes. Some of them are very simple, while others are bedazzled with diamonds. Yet they are all elegant in its own wat. This makes it the perfect accessory to any outfit. Its simple nature makes it a feature that grasps the attention, yet not outshines it.
Chain
A chain is a type of necklace that resembles a cable in its design and can consist of any type of metal. In general, these necklaces are thicker in look and heavier in weight. They come in various shapes and sizes. There are single pieces, which are more simple in its appearance. There are also chains that are combined with one or multiple pendants. And there are chain necklaces that feature several chains, which creates a pattern and depth.
Choker
Choker necklaces are unlike any other types of necklaces. They are designed to sit above your collarbones, falling along the base of the neck. Some chokers leave a little breathing room, while others are firmly wrapped around the neck. This popular design is a favorite because it highlights both shoulders and neck.
Cascade
While chains and chokers are usually more simple, cascade necklaces are true showstoppers! They feature multiple strands and emphasize any outfit. From a strapless dress to high necks, it is the perfect accessory to give that little extra. Some cascade necklaces feature different kinds of metals and some have multiple layers; both front and back.
Single Strand
The most traditional of them all: the single strand necklace. This type of necklace usually includes pearls, but it also exists in different kinds of metal. Single strand necklaces can be worn in different ways, as they vary in length. The longer versions of this type of necklace can be doubled, creating a unique look.
Types of pendants
A pendant is a piece of jewelry that is attached to a chain. This chain could be a necklace, yet it doesn't have to be. Even though the most common style is only one pendant per chain, any piece of jewelry can feature two or multiple pendants; the sky is the limit! And why not mix it up a little? Pendants come in different shapes, sizes, and forms; such as diamonds, jewels, and lockets.
Diamond
Many pendants feature a diamond. Diamond pendants are very versatile and there is a wide range to choose from, such as the cushion, princess, or emerald cut. They also come in different sizes, which ensures there is a diamond pendant for any occasion.
Gemstones
The use of gemstones in pendants really spice up every chain and ensures an aspect of uniqueness. Stones such as sapphires and rubies add a classic element to any type of jewelry.
Locket
If you like a classic look but colored gemstones are not your style, another popular choice is the locket. This type of pendant allows the wearer to store an item such as a picture within the pendant. As they are usually worn on a longer chain, you'll always have your special item close to your heart.
