What is a Blue Diamond?
Blue diamonds are found in nature and get their
color as a result of impurities that occur during the natural creation process of the diamond. It has not been treated or enhanced to receive its beautiful color. It emerges from the interaction of boron molecules within the structure of pure carbon crystal. As a result, the diamonds absorb the yellow light and reflect the blue light. The tone and saturation of the blue complexion are directly impacted by the concentration of boron molecules in the diamond. They come in different shades, such as clear blue, violet-blue and green toned blue.

Types of Blue Diamonds
Most of the blue diamonds are
Type IIb diamonds. As seen above, there is a spectrum within blue diamonds – ranging from light to deep blue. Most diamonds also have a secondary hue. This alters the color of the diamond either to be more green or grey and adds tint and character. The grading scale includes the following shades: faint blue, very light blue, light blue, fancy light blue, fancy intense blue, fancy deep blue and fancy vivid blue. If there is a secondary color present, we speak of fancy dark. No matter which version: they are all stunning!
Amongst the rarest of the world
Blue diamonds are astonishingly rare. They are only found in three areas on the planet: India, Australia and South Africa. The Cullinan Mine in South Africa is the primary source of blue diamonds. If we would divide colored diamonds into four groups on a rarity scale, blue diamonds would be on the top of the second rarest. They are rarer than
pink diamonds but less rare than purple, violet and red diamonds. However, the rarity does depend on different factors. The stronger the color, the rarer and more expensive the diamond. The value is based on its 4 C’s:
carat,
color,
clarity and
cut. During the evaluation of how much a blue diamond is worth, color intensity is the most important factor.

Hope Diamond
Ever heard of
The Hope Diamond? One of the most famous blue diamonds in history, and with good reason. It’s the fourth most expensive diamond in the world and rumors are that the diamond is cursed. Ancient stories tell that the diamond belonged in a statue of a Hindi goddess. Some theories state that Tavernier was the one who removed the stone. Others blame it on a faceless stranger who then sold it to Tavernier. Whichever story you believe, they all have the same conclusion: whoever took the diamond needed to be punished.
